Unicode Planes

The Unicode standard is divided into 17 "Planes", each containing up to 65,536 code points. The vast majority of everyday characters live in the Basic Multilingual Plane.

Basic Multilingual Plane

U+0000 to U+FFFF

Contains almost all modern languages and a large number of symbols.

Supplementary Multilingual Plane

U+10000 to U+1FFFF

Contains historic scripts, musical symbols, and emojis.

Supplementary Ideographic Plane

U+20000 to U+2FFFF

Contains rare and historic CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) ideographs.

Tertiary Ideographic Plane

U+30000 to U+3FFFF

Contains additional rare CJK ideographs.

Supplementary Special-purpose Plane

U+E0000 to U+EFFFF

Contains non-graphical format characters and tags.
